Academic Board purpose
According to the Australian Catholic University Constitution, the Academic Board is responsible for administering and implementing the academic policies and programs of the University.
The Board advises the Senate and the Vice-Chancellor and President on all developments and initiatives relating to the University’s teaching and research activities, including their quality.
Other responsibilities
In addition to the powers and functions described in Clause 25 of the Constitution, the Academic Board is responsible for the following:
- promoting excellence in teaching and learning and research and research training in the University
- overseeing all matters of quality on teaching and learning and research within the University
- overseeing quality assurance and quality implementation in relation to the academic functions of the University
- formulating, furthering and coordinating academic policy, programs and regulations throughout the University, including communication with the academic community
- recommending new courses to Senate for approval and to approve new non-award courses
- considering and approving, and, where necessary initiating, reviews and audits of existing courses
- developing and monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of academic policies and undertaking periodic reviews thereof
- referring matters to Faculties for consideration and report
- considering and taking action on reports from Faculties
- advising on academic aspects of the formulation and review of the University's Strategic Plan
- approving and overseeing the implementation of the University Learning and Teaching and Research Plans
- ensuring course development and review, teaching and learning, research and research training align with the University's Strategic Plan
- fostering discourse on issues related to higher education and the University's Identity and Mission in the sector
- providing advice on the relevant recommendations of internal and external reviews of the University's organisational units
- undertaking regular reviews of the Terms of Reference of its Standing Committees and to approve these Terms of Reference; and
- exercising other functions delegated by Senate to Academic Board.
