ARC grant success for ACU researchers

ACU projects have been awarded more than $3.1 million in funding in the latest round of Australian Research Council (ARC) grants.


ACU received funding for eight research projects, including two Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards (DECRA) and a $373,753 Discovery Indigenous grant.

Dr Karen McLean from the Learning Sciences Institute Australia will use her $369,996 DECRA grant to investigate how caregivers learn about the provision of children’s play at home and in the community.

Dr Matthew Crawford from the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry will use his $382,983 DECRA grant to investigate the role of religious belief and education training in the formation of a person’s sense of self in society, leading to either social harmony or conflict.

ACU has also received funding for five discovery projects, supporting a wide range of research projects across the University. The funded projects include:

  • $503,472 for Professor Jocelyn Nuttall from the Learning Sciences Institute Australia for Learning-rich leadership for quality improvement in early education
  • $256,966 for Associate Professor Noah Riseman from the Faculty of Education and Arts for Transgender Australians: the history of an identity
  • $535,418 for Associate Professor Clarence Ng from the Learning Sciences Institute Australia for Raising the literacy bar for economically-disadvantaged students
  • $351,361 for Dr Steve Matthews from the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry and Plunkett Centre for Ethics for Dementia, moral agency and identity
  • $425,349 for Associate Professor Carl Walkley, who will commence at the Mary Mackillop Institute for Health Research in 2018, for Understanding how RNA editing regulates RNA fate.
