To be eligible for admission to one of our research courses, you need to meet the entry requirements.

You can prove your English proficiency by providing us with evidence of your previous studies or qualifications, or by achieving a certain score in a relevant English language test.
View Appendix C of the Higher Degree Research Policy for English language requirements for HDR programs.
Before you submit an application for admission, you may wish to identify accredited supervisors who are active in your proposed area of research and, if appropriate, discuss your research proposal with them.
It is not mandatory to contact accredited supervisors prior to applying. If you're successful, the University will allocate suitably qualified supervisors to you (refer to section 10 of the Higher Degree Research Policy).
Should you contact an academic and they indicate they are willing to supervise you, this does not guarantee you will be admitted to the program or that they will be one of your supervisors. The availability of suitable supervisors is assessed as part of your application for admission (refer to section 10 of the Higher Degree Research Policy).
Supervisors normally are not required to be at the same campus location.

Preparing your application requires you to complete and collect a number of documents.
As of 19 August 2025, we've introduced an improved application form that includes an online referee report process. If you began an application before this date but haven't submitted it yet, we recommend starting a new application using the updated form to ensure a smoother experience.
To begin the application process, register at our online application system and begin filling out an application for admission.
You will need to supply your name and an email address. Please use an email address you check regularly.
As part of your research application, you will need to write a 2,000 word research proposal.
Writing a research proposal can feel daunting but remember, no one expects perfection. You're not expected to have all the answers now. This proposal is a foundation that you will build upon and is the first step in a longer, exciting research journey.
Learn more about the requirements for your research proposalYou are required to nominate two referees who are prepared, and able, to speak to your academic and research capability in support of your application.
The referee report is to be confidential between the nominated referee and the university.
As of 19 August 2025 we have implemented an improved application form which includes an online referee report. Please follow the below instructions based on when you began your application.
If you start your application form on or after 19 August 2025, the referee reports will be managed entirely online.
Once you submit your application through the online application portal, the referee report form will automatically be emailed to your nominated referees.
There’s no need to send the form yourself—just ensure your referees’ contact details are accurate when completing your application.
You can check if your referees have provided their report via your Applicant Portal. You are also able to modify your referee contact details if necessary.
Important: It is your responsibility to ensure that your referees submit the referee form. We will not assess your application until two referee reports have been received.
Sometimes reference request emails may be filtered into junk or spam folders. Please ask your referees to check these folders if they haven’t received the email shortly after you submit your application.
If your referees have any issues with the online form, they should contact international.admissions@acu.edu.au.
If you started your application prior to 19 August 2025, consider starting a brand new application which includes the online referee form. Otherwise, please follow the instructions below to organise your referee reports:
NOTE: It is your responsibility to ensure that your referees return the reports to the International Admissions Office. We won't consider your application until two referee reports have been received.
Before you submit your application, make sure you have attached all the necessary application and identification documents. These documents include:
You will need to submit a 2,000-word research proposal in a text-searchable PDF or Microsoft Word (.docx) format.
Writing a research proposal can feel overwhelming, but remember perfection isn’t expected. You’re not required to have all the answers at this stage. Your proposal is a starting point, laying the foundation for your research journey and helping us understand your ideas, interests, and potential.

Once you submit your application, your referees will receive an email invitation with a link to complete the online reference form. Let them know to expect this email, and advise them to check their junk or spam folders if they don’t see it.
It is your responsibility to ensure both referees complete and submit their reports. Your application will not be assessed until both forms have been received.
If you're applying for a scholarship with a specific closing date, your referee reports must be submitted within one week of that deadline.
