The Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS) Program of the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry (IRCI) welcomes applications from highly self-motivated students to study toward a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), developing research projects in any of the following broad areas of medieval and early modern history:

• Theology and literature, politics, culture, the arts;
• Liturgy, devotion, and popular culture;
• Medieval and early modern temporalities;
• The Crusades; medieval violence, memory, religious conflict;
• Medieval and early modern religious encounters;
• Popes and personnel of the papal court; the culture and theology of the priesthood;
• The history of conspiracy theories;
• Religious orders, medieval and early modern spiritualities, religious reform;
• Gender and sexuality;
• The history of biblical interpretation; historical theology; the history of preaching.

The IRCI’s MEMS program is the largest medieval and early modern program in Australia, and a dynamic, supportive, internationally-engaged research community. Students are supported by reading groups, seminars, professional development opportunities, events across the IRCI and ACU’s Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Dianoia Institute of Philosophy, and international networking opportunities.

Multiple research scholarships are also available to support PhD students affiliated with our flagship large-scale collaborative project, ‘Religious Mobilities: Medieval and Early Modern Europe and the World.’
