About paramedicine

Make vital decisions in moments and help people in their day-to-day lives. Paramedics are emergency and non-emergency specialists who work outside the hospital, helping patients in times of need and safely transporting them to care. You’ll manage patients with complex physical and mental health needs and provide medical assessment, treatment and care. Study paramedicine as a pathway to work in state ambulance services or with private paramedic employers such as the mining industry, event medical services and health clinics. Your career will make a difference every single day – and might even save lives.

Not all lights and sirens

There can be more to paramedicine than responding to emergencies. Paramedics are registered health professionals through the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA), with a broad understanding of injury, illness, health states and the health system. While part of the job may be responding to life-threatening emergencies like cardiac arrests and traffic crashes, you’ll also get the opportunity to help people in their day-to-day lives, for example attending to the elderly and helping in the community.

More than the nine to five

No two days are the same for a paramedic. Learn to problem solve and adjust your approach on the go so you can bring a sense of calm to chaotic environments. You can also help people find the best solution for their health needs, for example by navigating patients with less severe injuries or illnesses away from hospital emergency towards better options for them.

Attitude and aptitude

Are you empathetic, non-judgemental and passionate about helping people? Can you stay calm in stressful situations? Paramedics are proficient in using their clinical skills and performing procedures in uncontrolled environments. You’ll make the right decision quickly and independently, and put people at ease with good community skills and an understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology.

Broaden your horizons

Undertake a range of emergency professional experience opportunities in settings such as ambulances and hospitals, clinical practices or simulated environments. You may also be eligible to complete part of your degree overseas, such as healthcare ethics at our Rome Campus, or an immersive community engagement project in an overseas country, such as assisting an ambulance service in Timor Leste. Once you’ve graduated you can choose to work overseas as a paramedic in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and New Zealand.

Life in the Territory did not disappoint, and Caity believes working for St John Ambulance NT in the outback is an experience like nowhere else.
