Professor Philip Clarke

Adjunct Professor

Philip Clarke is an Adjunct Professor at ACU and an Emeritus Professor of Law at Deakin University. Previously he was Deakin University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) (2009-2010), Pro Vice-Chancellor International (2008-2009), Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law (1999-2008) and the inaugural Head of the Deakin Law School (1993-1999). As Deakin University’s Foundation Professor of Law he was instrumental in establishing and developing its law degree program. As a consultant, he also played a leading role in establishing the LLB degree programs at Swinburne University and at the ACU.

Professor Clarke is a graduate of the Universities of Western Australia (LLB) and Auckland University (LLM). He has extensive teaching experience in the fields of competition law, contract law and consumer protection at the Australian National University, Monash University, UWA, the ACU and at Deakin and Swinburne universities.

In 2004, he received the Deakin University’s Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Teaching and was a finalist in the Australian Awards for University Teaching; in 2006 he received a national Citation for Contributions to Student Learning. He has also written extensively in the fields of Competition Law, Contract Law and Consumer Protection, his most recent publications include Clarke and Clarke, Contract Law, Commentaries, Cases and Perspectives, 3rd edn 2016; Clarke, Corones and Clarke, Competition Law and Policy, Oxford University Press, 3rd edn 2011; and Corones and Clarke, Australian Consumer Law, Law Book Co, 5th edn 2015.

Professor Clarke is an Australian lawyer. He has experience of the law reform process through working as the Director of the Western Australian Law reform Commission and as a consultant on competition law to the Asian development Bank. He is a former editor of the Australian Business Law Review and the Australian and New Zealand Trade Practices Law Bulletin. He has also served as an auditor with the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency, chairing the audit of the University of New England in 2009 and Edith Cowan University in 2011. He was also a member of the panel that audited the University of Waikato in 2010 has conducted reviews of the Law Schools at the University of Canberra, the University of Western Sydney and the ACU.

Professor Clarke is a Specialist Member of the Hong Kong Council for accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications, the Chief Examiner for the Law Institute of Victoria’s Business Law Specialisation and the Chair of the Committee of Management for the Villamanta Disability Rights Legal Service.
