In keeping with Regulation 9 of the Higher Degree Research Regulations, Higher Degree Research Candidates shall be supported by staff who are accredited ACU supervisors.

ACU supervisors must be accredited per ACU processes before they can be assigned to an ACU HDR candidate’s supervisory panel.

An ACU staff member who has been accredited as an HDR supervisor (Full) or an HDR supervisor (Provisional) via the prescribed process may be appointed to the role of Principal Supervisor or Co-Supervisor or Research Advisor on an HDR candidate’s supervisory team.

Find a potential Supervisor

Non-ACU staff who can provide particular expertise to the supervision of an HDR candidate may be appointed to the role of Associate Supervisor or an Associate Supervisor (End-user) on an HDR candidate’s supervisory team.

The HDR Supervision Policy details the roles, responsibilities and the composition requirements of supervisory panels for ACU HDR Candidates.

Accreditation as an ACU Higher Degree Research Supervisor

There are two levels of accreditation at ACU. Staff may seek accreditation as either an HDR Supervisor (Full) or an HDR Supervisor (Provisional). Following accreditation as an HDR Supervisor (Full or Provisional), a staff member can be assigned to a role on an ACU HDR candidate’s supervisory panel.

Before submitting an accreditation request, staff should review the Accreditation of Higher Degree Research Supervisors Policy and the Research Active Definition and contact their Faculty Associate Dean Research to discuss.

Requests for accreditation should be submitted via the Supervisor Accreditation Request ‘SupReq’ e-form in Orion.

HDR Supervisor Training Modules

The HDR Supervisor Training Modules are now available in LEO. Staff who have not completed HDR Supervisor Training at ACU or at another institution should self-enrol and complete the modules. If you do not have access to LEO you should raise an IT request via Service Central.

External Supervisors (Associate Supervisors and Associate Supervisors (End-user))

Supervisors who are external to ACU, that is, Associate Supervisors or Associate Supervisors (End-user) do not need to complete ACU accreditation. Such supervisors are in addition to the ACU Principal and Co-Supervisors and, if required, will be added to supervisory panels following recommendation by the Faculty and then review and approval by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research.

An Associate Supervisor (End-user) is a specialist from outside ACU who can provide expertise to the supervision of an HDR student and who will directly use or directly benefit from the research. An Associate Supervisor (End-user) supplements the supervision provided by the ACU Principal Supervisor and Co-supervisor.

Principal Supervisors are encouraged to consider the value of including an Associate Supervisor (End-user) on a panel. Many of the HDR projects carried out at ACU are conducive to and would benefit from end-user associate supervision.

Refer Associate Supervisor End-user information for further details.

Questions about end-user associate supervision should be directed to Dr Andy King, Academic Lead, Research Translation and Impact; andy.king@acu.edu.au.
