The Medieval and Early Modern Studies research program is a young and vibrant research team with broad ranging expertise across medieval and early modern religious, cultural, intellectual, literary and social history. The program’s current team work on areas such as conspiracy theories and racism, medieval and early modern religious histories, the history of the crusades, women’s spirituality and writing, Renaissance theology, preaching and art history, the twelfth-century Anglo-Norman world, Reformation history and theology, queer medievalisms, among others. The MEMS program also works together on a large-scale project on ‘Religious Mobilities in the Medieval and Early Modern World’, while our affiliate staff in other IRCI programs and in the Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences add breadth to our research profile. Our current priorities are to build new research collaboration nationally and internationally, create new opportunities for public engagement, and continue to foster cutting-edge research into the many rich histories and dynamic interpretations of the medieval and early modern past.

The Medieval and Early Modern Studies Program at IRCI hosts a monthly seminar, ordinarily on the third Thursday of each month. Seminars showcase outstanding work from around Australia and the world on a wide range topics, such as conspiracy theory, political choice-making, imagination in art, disaster, plague, time, and moral invective, from early medieval Ireland through Renaissance, Reformation, and Enlightenment to the present.
A collaborative, international, five-year investigation of the chronology and character of movement within the traditions, structures, social groups, identities, and practices that comprised Christianity within Europe, their connections and relationships with varieties of Judaism and Islam in and around Europe, and colonial interactions of Europeans with non-European Christianities and religions.

Our global and multidisciplinary team of scholars are experts in the fields of philosophy, religion, and theology.
A major focus of research in this program is the extent to which different strands of early Christianity aimed to define themselves in relation to Jewish and Greco-Roman religious, philosophical, rhetorical, social, and cultural heritages.
